Meet the Photographer | Kate Maxwell Photography

It's about time I've given you an update on Jill and Doug's painting. Here's a bonus too….an interview with their amazing photographer, Kate Maxwell. Thanks to Kate for providing me with some pretty spectacular images for this painting!

1.  How long have you been in business?
I have been a professional photographer for about 4 years. I dropped out of law school and jumped into the wedding industry with both feet! It's been a party!

2.  Toot your own horn....what’s your specialty?
I am absolutely happiest when I am putting others at ease. It is sometimes no fun being in front of a camera so I do my best to keep everything relaxed and efficient!

3.  Who or what are your favorite subjects to photograph....your dream photo session?
I love couples - even more on their wedding day than during an engagement session - If that is ok to say! :) They are just filled with joy and that comes through on film! Beautifully happy people = beautiful photos. It just makes my job a cinch!

4.  Craziest thing you’ve captured on camera?
I am always noticing beautiful things to photograph while I'm driving. And a few times I have whipped out my giant DSLR while in the driver's seat and snapped away one-handed. Probably the most crazy/criminally negligent thing I've done!

5.  What do you like about working in the wedding industry?
Seriously - the happy people. And getting the family formal portraits done as quickly as possible. Oh, and the CAKE!!

6.  What is something you wish your clients knew about your job?
That most of it entails sitting on my bum in front of a computer. But that my happiest moments are when I am with them!

7.  When you are not working, what are you up to?
I fiddle around with all sorts of other hobbies. I LOVE woodworking and hiking. And reading nerdy Sci-Fi novels!

8.  Anything new and exciting coming up that we should know about? (either professionally or personally)
Because I am living away from Portland (my main wedding network) for a couple of years, I have started a stock photography arm of my business on the side - selling pre-styled stock photos on Etsy. I create beautiful backdrops for graphic artists and web designers to drop their designs onto for a sweet-action professional look in a jiffy! KateMaxShop.etsy.com

Not Just Your Teacher's Chalkboard

This week has been chock full of, well, chalk.  I've had an influx of requests for chalkboard artwork lately, and I am having so much fun creating these pieces.  Thank you Pinterest.

I'm off to pick up a couple more boards for a wedding next weekend, but I couldn't wait to show you these latest projects.

I'm kind of loving riding the wave of this trend.  Who know's what will be next!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend.  Hugs and kisses to all of our veterans out there!

Baby Butterflies

It's springtime and the babies are popping up everywhere!  Like most things I do, I can't keep it too simple. So, when it comes to giving a baby shower gift, I look at the registry just to get a decor idea and then take matters into my own hands.  Who doesn't like a personalized gift?!

My dear friend Suzy of Lily Red Studio is expecting a baby girl this June and I couldn't be more excited for her and her hubby.  Being a creative type that is a stationer, I knew I wanted to tie her decor to paper.  I found these great butterfly gift tags in the sale bin at Michaels as well as some pretty sheets of scrapbook paper.  To get the pretty paper into the shapes of the butterflies, I simply used spray adhesive on the cutouts and then traced around the cutouts with my x-acto knife.

Supplies

For my shadow box frame, I wanted a simple background to place the butterflies on.  I covered a board with canvas using fabric spray adhesive and some hot glue for the edges.

I simply gave the lil butterflies a soft fold to their wings and used hot glue to adhere them to my canvas board.  Nine butterflies later and I have a sweet gift for a sweet baby.

I just got Suzy's thank you note in the mail and word on the street is that this piece is already hanging perfectly in the nursery! Can't wait to meet Baby Rohan!

Springtime Blues…The Positive Kind

You know how I am about color…obsessed!  Well this next painting gives me a whole dish of color, and that color is BLUE.  Blue flowers?  What?  Yes!!!!

Lora Losinger of Sophisticated Floral put together an amazing bouquet for her clients Jill and Doug for their wedding last March in Portland, Oregon.  Now that Jill and Doug are living in Louisiana, it's time they brought their Northwest bouquet home via a Reenie Rose painting.  Thank you to Kate Maxwell Photography for providing me with the photos from afar!

Isn't this gorgeous!!!

The colors have me all giddy with excitement for this one.  I don't think I will ever use so much blue paint in my life…and I'm thrilled.  Here's the comp:

It's hard to see all those little queen anne's lace dots, but trust me, they're there.
